Different Moss Treatments For Removing Roof Moss

http://www.mosskill.co.uk/images/mossyroof.jpgAre you one of those people who are concerned about the widespread use of toxic chemicals for everyday household tasks ?

Many products that are displayed on the shelves of supermarkets and DIY sheds display orange "Hazchem" labels indicating that they are harmful, irritant or even corrosive.
They advise you not to allow children and pets near treated areas. They may also warn of the danger the chemicals pose to pond life, plants, shrubs and trees.

What Different Moss Treatments Are Available ?

Moss thrives in a damp climate. Although the UK can have pleasant dry periods, rain frequently falls. Moss spores take advantage of this and attach themselves to roofs, guttering, sheds, fences, drives and patios. When removing moss, there are several different options available to you.

Chemical Moss Killers
Homeowners often need to clear moss from their properties. Like many others, you may have used one of the commercially available  products available at garden centres and hardware shops.

This type of product certainly treats your moss problem. But if you're not careful you can affect the health of your family and damage your garden

Organic Moss Treatments
Fortunately, you don't have to use chemicals to rid your home and garden of moss. You can take a different approach with an organic moss treatment.

The simplest organic treatment is to scrape away the moss by hand. This is not to everyone's taste. The job is hard work and messy. You could also put yourself in danger if you have to climb on to a roof to remove the moss.

Another option is a power washer. You can use this to clear away the moss from most surfaces. This process can be very messy, it can also cause damage to the roof tiles

Copper Strips
An alternative organic treatment is to use the moss-killing properties of copper. You attach copper strips to the ridge of your roof and some of the tiles. When rain falls, the water washes copper residue from the strips across your roof and kills any moss spores.

This method of moss killing works but it has limitations. Coppers strips don't remove any existing moss. The residue is not plentiful or strong enough and you still have to find a way to remove the moss that’s still there. Copper strips rely on rain to wash residue on to moss spores. This is fine for a pitched roof and gutters, but rain won't carry copper residue across a flat roof.

Water-Based Moss Removal Products
The most effective and probably the safest option is to use a water-based moss killer. You spray it from a watering can or knapsack sprayer. The detergents in the solution work their way through the moss and clean the surface underneath.

You needn't have any concerns about harmful toxins and damage to the environment. A water-based moss killer contains no harmful ingredients. It won't pollute your garden and it is biodegradable.

A good quality water-based moss killer is also bleach-free. Some people use bleach to remove moss but it has the same effect as a proprietary chemical moss killer. It can cause chemical burns on the skin, damage vegetation and kill fish if it runs into a nearby pond or watercourse
