The removal of paint from wood is not a clear cut route. With different options on how to complete the task there are preferences for different people on which process is the most suitable. Although all processes for removing paint from wood are effective it is often down to the individual completing the task as to which method is used.
- Electric Sander. Sanding away paint is a fast process which removes the layer of paint from the surface in question. Using a power tool allows you to create a smooth and even layer across the surface but it does take some getting used to. Due to the nature of the equipment an electric sander is best used on a flat surface rather than on ornate details, as these could be flattened.
- Heat Gun. Using a heat gun to remove paint from wood is a fast process but you need to be careful. As it works quickly you could easily scorch the wood underneath, leaving a permanent mark. Unless you're repainting then it's fine. Heat guns, unlike other removal methods cannot remove paint varnishes as the consistency turns into a similar substance to glue under the heat.
- Solvent based paint strippers. Often containing flammable materials such as methanol, ethanol and acetone, solvent based paint strippers are very toxic and highly flammable. Applied directly to the surface the product works on the paint to soften it, making it easy to remove. Health implications for these products makes this process of paint removal dangerous but it can produce good results.
- Water based paint strippers. Developed over the last 10 years water based paint strippers have become more favourable than the solvent based variety of paint stripper. Containing no toxic chemicals the product is safe for the environment and for the user. Just as effective as the solvent solutions, water based paint strippers are more favoured by the health and safety department.
Whichever method is decided upon to complete the task all the methods
have their own benefits and are suitable for different people. In all
methods of paint removal it is also necessary to wear the appropriate
protective clothing and to take your time with the task. Rushing the
job could result in injury or an accident so slow and steady is the
way forward to effective paint removal.
