Should you paint over mould if you use mould resistant paint?
This is a common
question and not something we would recommend.
What Do You Do
Instead?
Instead of painting
over mould, remove as much as possible from the surface before
painting it. Use a mould remover such as MoGo. If the mould is bad
you may need two applications.
It can be difficult
to remove mould from porous surfaces such as wood, and in those
cases sanding the wood can help. However be aware that sanding mouldy
wood can be risky as it releases thousands of tiny mould spores into
the air. MoGo can be useful here as it does penetrate porous
surfaces.
If you can’t
remove all traces of mould you can apply a mould sealant such as
Mogo Damp Seal before painting the surface. Known as encapsulation,
this process seals in any mould that cannot be removed, preventing it
from growing and spreading. It also helps repel future mould from the
surface. Before you paint over mould sealant, allow it to dry
completely.
When to Use Mould Resistant Paint.
Use mould resistant
paint in areas that are subject to lots of moisture, like bathrooms
and kitchens, in damp spaces like basements, and in any areas that
have previously had mould problems. You can purchase paints designed
to resist mould or simple buy an anti mould additive and use your
usual paint. These paints and additives don’t carry guarantees
but they certainly help.
Make sure surfaces
are clean, free of mould, and completely dry before painting them. If
you apply a mould sealant to a surface, allow the surface to dry
completely before applying the sealant and then allow that to dry
completely before painting.
