Moss Removal from paths and Driveways

Removing Moss from Drives and Patios

Moss seems to appear from nowhere. Without warning it starts to grow on your drive and patio. It's not just unsightly either. You could easily slip on its damp, greasy surface.

What's more, no matter how much you guard against the return of moss, it always makes its way back. The wind carries moss to your home. When conditions are damp, as they often are at certain times of the year, the moss spores thrive on your drive and patio surfaces.

Moss Removal
If you have the time and energy, you could do battle with your moss by hand. You could scrape it away, bag it up and dispose of it.

This can be an arduous task. You have to work on your hands and knees with a scraping tool.

An alternative is to blast the moss from your drive or patio with a power washer. This has the added bonus of cleaning away any dirt or algae at the same time. The problem is the mess. The water sends the moss in all directions. It can end up across your garden and on the walls and windows of your home.

Chemical Moss Removal
A less messy and easier approach is to use a chemical moss remover. You spray this on to the moss with a watering can or a knapsack sprayer.

But you need to be careful about your use of chemicals in a garden area. The residue can run off a drive or patio and kill surrounding plants and vegetation. If it enters a pond, it can be toxic to fish and water plants.

When you look at the warning label on a chemical moss killer, you may also see a reference to children and pets. The solvents in the moss killer are so strong, they can be a threat to any animal or child who comes into contact with them.

Water-Based Moss Killer
The safest approach is to use a water-based moss killer. This is just as effective as a chemical equivalent. Application is simple. You put the water-based solution in a knapsack sprayer or watering can and soak the moss on your drive and patio.

Check the weather forecast before you start. The best time to do the job is during a dry spell. Within a day, you should see results.

You don’t have to worry about rinsing away any residue either. The rain eventually takes care of it. And you can rest assured the residue will not affect your children, animals, pond life or plants.

How Water-Based Moss Killer Works
Unlike chemical solvents, water-based moss killer contains detergents. These penetrate the moss and clean the surface of your drive and patio. The principle is similar to that of detergent washing away the food and grease on a plate, except you don't have to use a scrubbing brush.

Next time moss invades your garden, consider using a water-based moss killer. It's simple to apply, economical and non-toxic. It also helps to stop moss spores regaining a foothold.
