Organic Moss Treatment

Organic Moss Treatment Products and Ideas

Moss thrives in a damp climate. Although the UK can have pleasant dry periods, rain frequently falls. Moss spores take advantage of this and attach themselves to roofs, guttering, sheds, fences, drives and patios.

Chemical Moss Killers
Homeowners need to clear moss from their properties. Like many others, you may have used one of the chemical moss killers available at garden centres and hardware shops.

But also like many other people, you may be concerned about the toxic nature of these chemical products. The labels on the sides of the products advise you not to allow children and pets near treated areas. They may also warn of the danger the chemicals pose to pond life, plants, shrubs and trees.

Chemical products certainly treat your moss problem. But if you're not careful you can affect the health of your family and your garden.

Organic Moss Treatments
Fortunately, you don't have to use chemicals to rid your home and garden of moss. You can take a different approach with an organic moss treatment.

The simplest organic treatment is to scrape away the moss by hand. This is not to everyone's taste. The job is hard work and messy. You could also put yourself in danger if you have to climb on to a roof to remove the moss.

Another option is a power washer. You can use this to clear away the moss from most surfaces. In the process, however, you send pieces of moss all over the place and can create a mess.

Copper Strips
An alternative organic treatment is to use the moss-killing properties of copper. You attach copper strips to the ridge of your roof and some of the tiles. When rain falls, the water washes copper residue from the strips across your roof and kills any moss spores.

This method of moss killing works but it has limitations. Coppers strips don't remove any existing moss. The residue is not plentiful or strong enough and you still have to find a way to remove the moss that’s still there. Copper strips rely on rain to wash residue on to moss spores. This is fine for a pitched roof and gutters, but rain won't carry copper residue across a flat roof.

Water-Based Treatment
The most effective organic treatment is to use a water-based moss killer. You spray it from a watering can or knapsack sprayer. The detergents in the solution work their way through the moss and clean the surface underneath.

You needn't have any concerns about harmful toxins and damage to the environment. A water-based moss killer has no chemical solvents. It doesn't pollute your garden because it's biodegradable.

A good quality water-based moss killer is also bleach-free. Some people use bleach to remove moss but it has the same effect as proprietary chemical moss killers. It can cause chemical burns on skin, damage vegetation and kill fish if it runs into a nearby pond.

A further bonus to using a water-based moss killer is the reasonable price. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on it and you protect the environment at the same time.
