Solvent vs water-based degreaser?
Does your degreaser offer you the “best value for money”?
Is your degreaser “safe to use” or does it contain high levels of “CAUSTIC” that causes damage to metals and surface?
Degreasers are commonly used to clean greasy engines, engine parts, transmissions, machinery, garages, workshop floors and concrete driveways. However, there are many different degreasers on the market to choose from with many claiming to be the best.
So what do you look for when purchasing a degreaser?
Solvent vs water-based degreasers
There are two broad categories of degreasers on the market. Solvent and water-based.
Although solvents such as diesel, kerosene, turps etc work effectively as degreasers they introduce a number of risks and potential hazards in-use such as fire and explosion, together with health concerns due to hazardous vapours and fumes. In addition, care should be taken with the storage of flammable substances, particularly in industry where HSE controls may apply. This makes water-based degreasers a better option for simple, problem free degreasing.
FUZE Engine Degreaser is an extremely effective water-based degreaser, expertly formulated to remove heavy grease, oils and soils from any surface. It is essentially a water-based (thus non flammable) product. It is caustic free and carries no hazchem warning labels, meaning that it is easy to transport and store. Caustic based degreasers are widely used and offer effective degreasing, however they do carry a risk of damage to some metals and surfaces during the degreasing process
Is your degreaser “value for money”?
With so many degreasers available on the market, this is an important question, most suppliers claim that their product is the best and offers the best value for money. But when choosing a water-based degreaser it is important to go beyond the consideration of cost, but look at “best value for money”.
As previously stated, a number of products on the market contain high concentrations of
caustic, whilst this material is effective as a degreasing agent, it is cheap and can damage the very substrate that you are trying to clean. These products should perhaps not be considered as “the best available”.
Is your degreaser “safe to use”?
Many degreasers are solvent-based, thus flammable and volatile (gives off vapours), care should be taken when using these products. They should be used away from ignition sources and used only outdoors or in ventilated areas. They should not be used in confined spaces such as garages and sheds. You should ensure that the product is biodegradable and not hazardous to the environment.
FUZE Engine degreaser is water-based, non-caustic and fully biodegradable. It can be used in confined spaces as it does not give off any vapours. It will not damage the underlying substrate.
