Moss Removal

Moss removal from Drives and Patios

Moss can appear from nowhere. Without warning it will grow on your drive and patio. It can even appear on decking. It is not just unsightly, it is slippery and can cause a nasty accident.

What's more, no matter how much you treat the underlying surface, the moss always comes back. The wind carries moss to your home. When conditions are damp, as they so often are at certain times of the year, the moss spores grow on your drive and patio surfaces.

Moss Removal
If you have time and are fit, you could attempt to remove the moss yourself by hand. This is however a very arduous task involving a lot of scraping and kneeling down. The removed moss would then have to be bagged up and disposed of.

This is a very time consuming job.

An alternative is to remove the moss from your drive or patio with a power washer. This also gives your drive or patio a good clean, so that can be a bonus. Unfortunately this process creates a lot of mess. The water sends the moss in all directions. It can end up across your garden and on the walls and windows of your home.

Chemical Moss Removal
A far easier and cleaner approach is to remove the moss chemically. The chemical can be sprayed on to the moss using either a watering can or knapsack sprayer.

This method of removing moss should be carried out carefully, particularly if using hazardous products, as the over spray or residue can run off the treated area into vegetation and even water courses. Many chemicals are deadly to fish, if the run off enters a pond or river it can very quickly start to kill the fish. It can also be toxic to vegetation so may kill grass or plants in surrounding areas.

You should always check the label on chemical products to see if it mentions children or pets. The biocides in many moss killers are very hazardous and can harm animals and small children. They can cause burns and/ or breathing problems. They can also be poisonous if consumed.

Water-Based Moss Killer
The safest approach is to use a water-based fully biodegradable, non toxic moss killer. These can be just as effective as the hazardous equivalent, but without the risks. Using this type of product is the same as before - You simply put the water-based solution in a knapsack sprayer or watering can and soak the moss on your drive and patio.

Before using any chemical product you should check the weather forecast before starting. The job should be done on a dry day when no rain is forecast. For best results it should also be carried out during spring or summer when the moss is actively growing

With the non hazardous products there is no need to wash away the residue after treatment. This will be dealt with when it next rains and you can be assured that the residue will not affect your children, animals, pond life or plants.

How non hazardous Water-Based Moss Killer Works
Unlike traditional solvent based moss killers, water-based moss killers contain a blend of detergents. These penetrate the moss and at the same time clean the surface of your drive and patio.

Next time you are troubled by moss, take the safe approach, consider using a water based product. They are simple to use, cost effective and non toxic to you, your plants and your pets.
