Mould Prevention in damp rooms

 Black Mould Prevention

Black mould growth on bathroom ceilings and walls is usually a sign of condensation, and in bathrooms and shower rooms there is generally plenty of that. The warm, moist air comes into contact with a cold surface and condensation forms. Condensation is typically found on windows and other colder areas.
If there is enough condensation, and the environment is warm black mould can grow.

Mould covered ceilings and walls are a cause for concern, but there are ways to stop the condensation and thus reduce the likelihood of mould growth:
  1. Reduce the moisture that is created and circulates in the air
  2. Ventilate to remove the moist air before the moisture can condense and cause problems
  3. Heat and insulate your home so that there are less cold surfaces and the air is kept warm enough to hold the moisture so reducing the amount of condensation
Moist air in a bath or shower room is pretty much impossible to eradicate. Ventilation can be effective and an extractor fan helps greatly thus reducing the possibility of mould growth. Other ventilation ideas such as opening a window may not be practical in winter when the outside temperature is cold.
Improving heating and insulation although expensive, is an option.
The above means that condensation and black mould are often found in bath and shower rooms, particularly those with inadequate heating and ventilation.

How to Prevent Mould in Your Bath and Shower Room

If you cannot reduce the level of condensation either by ventilation or heating, there is another option. This is to kill the mould and treat the walls and ceilings to prevent future growth.
There are 3 steps:
  1. Paint your walls with a mould killer to kill off any mould present on the walls, then clean off
  2. Paint on a damp seal solution
  3. Once the damp proof has dried, use an anti mould emulsion, or mix an anti mould additive into your emulsion
To summarise - if you can stop the condensation you will stop the mould. This is often very difficult to achieve and you may have to resort to simply treating the mould rather than the cause. There are a wide range of products available that can help you tackle the problem, however do bear in mind that if you don't treat the cause, the mould will eventually return.
