Preventing Mould

The first step to controlling mould is prevention. Preventing mould from growing is much easier than cleaning it up once it does begin to develop. There are many safe and effective things you can do to prevent mould in your home.
To help prevent mould:
  • Clean up water spills and leaks immediately. Use a fan to help dry damp furnishings.
  • Fix leaking pipes, washing machine hoses, sinks, baths, showers or toilets as soon as possible.
  • Repair leaking roofs as soon as possible.
  • Use a fan in the bathroom or open a window when showering or bathing
  • Use a cooker hood above the hob or open a window when cooking
  • Don't fit carpets in rooms such as bathrooms, utility rooms etc
  • Use anti-mould paint in bathrooms and kitchens
  • Use a dehumidifier
  • Address mould problems as soon as possible
Despite paying attention to all of the above, mould can sometimes develop. There are safe ways to deal with its removal though.

Removing Affected Materials

Whilst with the correct product, mould can be removed from most household materials such as glass, metal, tiles, grout, ceilings etc there are occasions when it is necessary to replace the items, whether it be for convenience or cost effectiveness. For example soft furnishings and mattresses – treating delicate fabrics with mould removal products may lead to staining, it may be more cost effective and time efficient to simply replace the item.
